The BBC web site picked up the story and as you can see there was much media activity around the phone box in Church Street, with camera crews falling over themselves to film for local news programs.

The school are very pleased to learn that the Parish Council have decided to donate the £5,000 prize money to the school. Many thanks to them (and to Nigel Bennee for the photos).

The K6 kiosk project

When the Great Shelford Parish Council adopted the K6 telephone kiosk this year it was decided that it should be preserved as a public art installation to help raise a smile on those that pass it and to become a talking point.

The K6 lies on the route most children take to the school and the Parish Council decided that the school seemed a natural candidate to be approached to implement the first project.

The school has suggested ideas for characters, with seasonal, historical or fictitious links, who might be standing in the kiosk. The school purchased a mannequin with some funding from the Parish Council. The children, with the help of their teachers, dress the mannequin up to look like the character they have chosen. At the same time, the children practise their creative writing skills by answering questions about why this person is in the telephone kiosk. Who might he/she be phoning? Why? How might the telephone conversation go? One of these ideas is selected to be included in the Shelford Village News which is published once a month and delivered to the residents of Great Shelford. The character will be changed regularly.

The school are delighted to have a community project that is fun at the same time as offering another creative dimension to their teaching and learning.

Here's a list of some of the suggestions for characters in the phone box:

Seasonal

Historical

Fictitious

Halloween – witches etc

Queen Victoria

Batman

Guy Fawkes

Tony Blair

Dennis the Menace

The Innkeeper in Bethlehem

Samuel Pepys

Sponge Bob

Santa

Florence Nightingale

Superman

An ancient Greek character

Harry Potter

What do people think?

The Telephone Kiosk Project has created much animated discussion in the school staff room and the children have had a lot of fun contributing their ideas. All the children are looking forward to their classes’ turn to prepare the mannequin and write the stories.

A woman who lives opposite the telephone kiosk contacted the school to say she thought it was a marvellous idea. She enjoyed seeing Guy Fawkes in the phone box and is looking forward to seeing who will appear next. She said that as she is doing her garden many people stop to look at the phone box and start a conversation with her about it. A real community project!

The first project

As we approached 5th November, the Year 1 Class, together with their teaching team, produced Guy Fawkes. The Year 5 class wrote many creative stories to explain the presence of Guy Fawkes in the telephone box.
